About Houston IT Jobs

IT jobs lend themselves very well to remote operation, with workers finding it a relatively seamless transition to providing technical support from the comfort of their own homes. Additionally, increased reliance on technology for purposes of social connection meant the demand for IT services has remained relatively stable throughout 2020. The Houston, Texas IT sector is no different, with nearly over 1000 active job openings available for a variety of IT positions and evidence of future growth. Some of the largest IT employers in the Houston area are Deloitte, the Houston Methodist healthcare system, and Amazon. Companies will also contract out to IT specialists with extensive experience if they do not have a designated IT department.

Qualifications and Income

Compared to a lot of other careers, IT jobs are much less variable in the qualifications necessary to apply for a position as well as in the general purpose of each IT position. The majority of IT jobs only require a high school diploma but do demand a high level of proficiency with computer software, with Excel and Microsoft Office being the most commonly requested areas of proficiency. A good IT specialist must be particularly adept at navigating the necessary software and troubleshooting potential problems, which can be achieved through either work experience or completing a variety of IT certification programs that typically take six months or less to complete.

Employers often require prior experience in customer service positions too, as the job entails assisting customers and potentially other employees at a broader company in navigating technical problems. Entry-level IT positions are typically paid an hourly wage of $15 in Houston with a potential for a slight increase depending on prior experience. Upper level and managerial IT positions in Houston that require extensive experience and often an associate’s degree pay roughly $25 to $30 hourly.

Job Satisfaction

Although IT jobs at first glance may not seem like the most thrilling of occupations, many of IT specialists enjoy their jobs quite a bit because they view it as a means of accumulating technological skills. That being said, many IT specialists in Houston commented that they wished the position offered higher wages and better benefits, as it is not uncommon for IT specialists to be employed only part-time which results in them missing out on full-time benefits.
