The City of Houston also has an expansive parks department with nature centers, youth sports leagues, and nearly 400 parks and 167 other outdoor spaces as well as a city-sanctioned animal shelter with a strict policy to accept and care for every animal brought to them.

Employers and Positions

Because of the sheer size of the city, there are an enormous variety of positions available through the City of Houston government. The Public Works Department is one of the largest and is frequently hiring for a variety of technical, engineering, or administrative positions. Technician positions through Public Works tend to be paid hourly at a rate of anywhere from roughly $15 to $25 hourly depending on the particular jobs and the necessary qualifications, which can range from general technical licensing to a full Bachelor’s degree in a technical field. Other common public works positions include inspectors, which require several years of relevant job experience and pays closer to $30 hourly. Above the hourly pay range are the engineering and supervisory positions that can pay anywhere from $75,000 to $120,000 annually depending on the responsibilities and experience necessary for the job, which typically includes a Bachelor’s degree and several years of relevant work experience.

After the Public Works Department, the Public Health Department is one of the most highly staffed departments in the City of Houston. The Health Department employs mostly data analysts and a variety of administrative positions responsible for tracking and managing the city’s public health status. These positions pay anywhere from $70,000 to $110,000 annually depending on the particular qualifications and rank of the position. Outside of these two departments, city positions are much more spread out, but the most common positions in the city are data analyst jobs that require a background in statistics and pay roughly $50,000 to $80,000 on average or manual labor positions that pay an hourly wage equivalent to technician jobs in the Public Works department.

Overall

Ultimately, job satisfaction among employees working for the City of Houston is relatively high. Many employees commended the City for its favorable benefits packages that are flexible and include health, vision, and dental insurance. Some employees were critical of upper management and wished there was greater opportunity for advancement but were overall pretty content in their job positions.
